Reader Reviews Being a pilot I'm around noise for most of my workday and hearing protection is essential. I've used various brands of foam ear plugs and over-the-head ear muffs for many years. The muffs are very effective but their clamping pressure gives me a headache after a hour or two. The foam plugs are much more comfortable, at least for me, than the muffs. I've also used many different brands of soft ear plugs. Out of all of the ones that I've tried my preference is the soft ear plugs made by Howard Leight. The type of foam used by H.L. expands in the ear canal with just the right amount of pressure; not too much which would cause discomfort and not too little which would allow noise to get by. Also, the foam does not attract dirt which is a nice feature when you're taking the plugs in and out all day long. Soft ear plugs are usually available with or without a cord. I find that the cord keeps the plugs handy (around my neck) when they're not in use and therefore its less likely that I'll set the darn things down and lose them. You pay just a bit more for the corded plugs but what you'll save by not losing so many pair will make up the difference. Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
