Just finished wrapping about $700 worth of assorted coins. Mostly pennies. The wife hoards coins which is a great idea. About 4 months ago she told me to put them in her bank account. I looked at the work involved. Couldn't even lift it. Had to roll the vase on its side to get the coins out. Like Scrooge McDuck said, "Work smarter not harder". So I searched for a coin sorter. Our credit union used to have one in the lobby but they disconnected it. Stated they had to repair it too often. Looked for a coin star but none in my neighborhood and couldn't find one. So decided had to buy one so surfed the internet. They were really expensive. Finally found one on sale that met my wallet. Churned out about $200 worth the first night. Took about 4 hours. Would have been faster if I would have sorted and cleaned the coins first. Should have been more careful buttons, bent coins, $1 coins and Kennedy half dollars got in the way. Had to wash my hands and some of the coins several times because of dirt and goo. Being lazy at first I grabbed hand fulls and dumped them in the hopper. Tried to be careful but still some junk coins got by. Tap the side and they fell free. But had to take it apart a few times because of damaged, dirty and wrong sized coins. Even when you are careful the wrong coins get by. Just turn the power off, unplug the cord, remove 3 screws and clear the jam. So this weekend processed about $500 worth. More careful so took a little longer. The sorter is fast, real fast. I believe the 312 coins a minute is true but make sure every thing is clean, the right size and not damaged. Faster then I liked at times. Found that if I tossed in several at a time worked best. Had more pennies than any other coin so when put in a handful the pennies were running over each other. Removed the preformed wrappers because of it. It was easier because sometimes the pennies jumped in the dimes tube because they were bumping into each other and couldn't get in the wrapper fast enough. This way I could check them before wrapping. Foreign coins can be a problem because of the odd sizes will cause jams or go down the wrong slot. In closing it was worth the cost. Just sort out the damaged, dirty and wrong size coins first. If you have more pennies than any other coin like I did toss in a few at a time so the slot won't be overwhelmed. When the penny tube was almost full I would slow down to prevent jamming because the coins would push each other. Don't try to put all the coins in at once and everything should work fine. Durable? Tougher than I thought it would be and I have several more tip jars to do. We'll see. I like it a lot. Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
